Press Release
Harlesden High Street is pleased to present Emission, a solo presentation of work by London-based artist, Savannah Harris. Centred around themes of chaos and destruction, the booth will bring together a new series of large-scale abstract paintings confined within an immersive installation designed by the artist for a corner stand.
Harris’ practice intuitively moves through and alongside forms of colour, both spontaneous and heavy in nature, producing complex geometric shapes on the surface of the picture plane. Often incorporating sand, these works embody erosion - a sense of wearing away. Tying into Harris’ Caribbean and Cuban heritage, the sand in these paintings also links to a history of lived experience; a material found in her familial landscape, transported to add physicality to her internalised landscape.
Reflecting the raw aesthetics of a celestial crater, the installation will incorporate a volcanic ash backdrop with darkened flooring of a similar texture imitating a swelling of darkness - a void absent of light and colour, both unsettling and alluring. Much like the unknown entities of a volcano and the magnitude of colour that lingers beneath its surface, Harris turns this inside out, offering a glimpse of the porous properties of the canvas and its potential to contain such vibrancy.
