Press Release
For Basel Social Club 2025, Harlesden High Street &  Kendra Jayne Patrick and will present (It’s a) Whole Lotta Money (in this muf****er), an exhibition about transmutation. Transmutation describes an object or animal whose state is or has experienced being changed  into another form.

This year, Basel Social Club will take place at a bank. Not just any bank, but a Swiss. Private. Bank.

Swiss banking is the stuff of nearly a century of international lore. Characters in movies demand that their money hit the Geneva account by 10am; rappers brag about keeping their money here;  and few things were sexier in the 80s than the country’s elusive number-only accounts.

Global banking is a brutal business, but here in Switzerland that business has a decidedly regal air; one suggesting prudent money management as opposed to staggeringly grand theft. The country’s exaltation of timeliness and quiet, the unforgettable Alps, prevalence of traditional architecture, and everything seeming to ‘work,’ can engulf even the ordinary with a touch of magic.

***

In these glorious settings  - both Switzerland and the bank - we will show artists whose artworks  harness the same sort of alchemy, only to be altered again by the contours of this mythical location within a location. One artist conflates and correlates the principles between white upper and black lower classes by noticing their very similar tastes in fine jewelry. One uses gold to consider when and how foreign labor becomes a portfolio asset. Another uses Sci-Fi aesthetics to imagine wormholes that zap you to a more peaceful timelines.  And so on. Exhibited, the show will embody a wink and a nudge, a gaze returned, and a spirited peek behind the curtain.
