Natural Born Car Salesman is a collaborative presentation featuring artists Joe Cool, Andre Morgan, Melle Nieling, and Aaron Roth, presented by Harlesden High Street and GROVE.

Natural Born Car Salesman starts with a car dealership. Is a gallery, a small business that sells high-priced items to the buyer (or collector), all that different to your average Renault or Citroën dealership? And the gallerist to a salesman, roving the floor in search of his next client?

Countering the popular, ill-conceived “group show,” Natural Born Car Salesman is both a testament to the power of the gallery as cultural curator, and to the (relative) humility and humour of that pursuit. Collecting artists both galleries feel make significant contributions to contemporary, international visual culture, the presentation creates an immersive and coherent environment that extends beyond merely hanging artwork. As such, in the art fair context, the role of the gallery becomes both ancillary and crudely heightened in a sales capacity.

Consistent with both Harlesden High Street’s and GROVE’s curatorial practices, “important” art does not necessarily equate to being “visible in the market.” Placing worth in alternative, subcultural, and non-Western visual cultures, Harlesden High Street and GROVE have sourced work from artists as varied as Joe Cool, notable for the cover of Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle (1993), and Aaron Roth, a Los Angeles-born artist working from Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The galleries state clearly what we already know – no art market fame can compete with the excitement that accompanies interesting and engaging work.

With that, enjoy the show and come find us if you have any questions – we’ve never seen such beautiful work and promise we can get you the best price.
